FRAUD: Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Post by admin »

The victim called to report that she had received a letter from a company, Superior Servicing, approximately two weeks ago regarding the forgiveness or consolidation of her student loans. She said the letter appeared legitimate and appeared to be related to the government program “Free Application for Federal Student Aid” (FAFSA).

The letter listed all of her personal information, including her social security number. She called the contact number on the letter and spoke to a customer service representative. The customer service rep asked questions about her employment, income, etc. to see if she qualified for their "assistance". She was then asked for her bank routing number and checking account number, which she provided. The customer service rep told her they would collect $300 for their fee.

The victim thought this meant it was coming out of her current loan amount, not her checking account and they did not make that part clear. On 09/15/2023, $300 was taken out of her checking account by [eChk.to/sup 8662025126]. She called her bank, and they froze her accounts and access. She also called NelNet, which is in charge of managing federal student loans, and they advised her she had been scammed and should contact law enforcement to make a report. She mentioned the University of MN recently had a large data leak that included students' social security numbers and other sensitive information.
