Dear Members of the MAPS Community:

Mankato Area Public Schools has a formal agreement with the Mankato Department of Public Safety in which local officers are placed in our schools as school resource officers (SROs). These specially trained officers play an important role in our school community as they build relationships and interact with students, staff and families. They are also a highly visible presence for students and staff during the school day and often during school-sponsored events in the evening and on weekends. This relationship has existed for many years, and our partnership is highly valued by MAPS.

In recent days, you may have seen media reports about a change in state law that limits the use of force and restraints on students. There is some confusion and/or concern about how the law impacts police officers. As a result, some law enforcement agencies in Minnesota have suspended their school resource officer agreements with their local school district.

For the first week of school (September 5 - September 8), SROs will not be physically located at MAPS schools but will be available on an 'on call' basis to assist school staff. While SOs will not be consistently present at East and West High Schools, public safety officers will be available to respond to emergency incidents at each school. The Department remains committed to provide support to our schools and school events.
We hope clarifications to the law are made soon so that SOs can return to our schools.

Thank you for the opportunity to address this important issue. It emerged quickly, drew widespread media attention, and continues to develop. Please be assured that we join our public safety partners in remaining committed to doing all we can to keep our students and staff safe.

Sincerely,
Paul Peterson
Superintendent
