Willmar Police Department Suspends SRO’s

On 09/05/23, the Willmar City Council received information regarding the recent legislative changes that affect School Resource Officers and the related challenges regarding the current SRO contract with the schools.

After discussion and recommendation, the Willmar City Council voted to terminate the current City / School SRO contract. The termination was deemed necessary to allow SROs to retain their full law enforcement authorities to best serve the schools and to protect the students.

The Willmar Police Department has placed SROs in the Willmar schools, as planned, and will continue to do so into the future even in absence of a contract. The safety and security of the students and school staff remains the highest priority for the Willmar Police Department. The city will continue to reassess any legislative changes that would allow a new City / School SRO agreement and would welcome the opportunity to do so.
