…Don’t ever call the number in the email!!

01.30 The victim received an email from whom he thought was the Geek Squad. The email indicated that his subscription was renewed and $471.00 was automatically withdrawn from his bank account. He stated he previously had a Geek Squad account but canceled it years ago. He called the 1-800 number on the email and spoke with an employee identifying himself as "Peter Martin." Martin explained how he could rectify the situation. Martin stated he needed to download a specific software called "Any Desk" to recoup his money. The victim downloaded the software and entered in his information requesting a $60 payment as explained by Martin. Martin then stated that he accidentally refunded the victim $60,000 and showed him a Wells Fargo bank statement that appeared to be legitimate. Martin then stated the only way to fix this would be for the victim to wire the extra money back to Martin. The victim went to Wells Fargo and attempted to wire $50,000 to the account provided by Martin. Per the victim, Wells Fargo employees advised him this was a scam and implored him to not send the money; the victim sent it anyway. The money was wired to Peng Li in Hong Kong. The victim has since realized he should not have sent the money and attempted to stop the wire unsuccessfully. Per Wells Fargo, the wire transfer was already accepted.
